Charles Burant, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Burant is Professor of Internal Medicine and holds the Robert C. and Veronica Atkins Professor of Metabolism, Section of Metabolism Endocrinology and Diabetes. He also has appointments in Integrative Physiology and Computational Medicine and Biology in the U-M Medical School and Human Nutrition, School of Public Health. He is the Director of the Taubman Research Institute which support physician-scientists and projects working to accelerate the translation of basic science to clinical practice. In addition, he is the director of the University of Michigan metabolomics core. Dr. Burant’s research program centers on the interaction between genetics and environmental factors in the development of obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes with a specific interest in understanding how cardiorespiratory fitness modulates the risk of metabolic diseases. His studies integrate metabolomic profiling with other ‘omics technologies to predict individual responses to diet, exercise and weight loss with the goal to individualize interventions to improve metabolic health.
